An Irish teenage girl has fallen ill on a pilgrimage in Bosnia.

Aoife Murray (15), from Ashfield, Mullingar, was on a trip with her mother to the holy village of Medjugorje when she fell ill. It is understood she is being treated for suspected meningitis at Mostar Hospital.

Her local parish priest, Fr Barry Condron, had hit out at the treatment the teenager had been receiving and called on hospital officials to allow her to travel back to Ireland.

A VHI spokeswoman said it had been in contact with the hospital in an effort to ensure the best treatment for the teenager. But the health insurer said they could not comment any further on individual cases.
