THE GOVERNMENT yesterday announced grants of more than €8 million for the Irish community in Britain.

The grants, which represent a 13 per cent increase on last year, will go toward voluntary organisations providing services for drug abuse victims, the elderly, the homeless and the Traveller community.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheál Martin said funding would also go to heritage and cultural projects, which are vital for the development of community networks and spirit.

"These grant allocations are a clear reflection of the Irish Government's strong commitment to the welfare and enhancement of our community in Britain," he said.
