The seasonally adjusted volume of Irish industrial production rose by 4.8 per cent for the three-month period from November to January, according to the Central Statistics Office.

The figures show production in January was 4.8 per cent higher than in January last year.

The "Modern Sector", comprising a number of high-technology and chemical sectors, showed an annual increase in production for January of 10.8 per cent, while a decrease of 6.2 per cent was recorded in the "Traditional" sector.

Industrial production for 2004 as a whole was up just 0.7 per cent on the previous year.
