Rowing: The Irish men's lightweight four have won the silver medal in the final of the first leg of the Rowing World Cup in Munich.

The team is made up of Atlantic challenger Gearoid Towey, Skibbereen's Eugene Coakley, Coleraine native Richard Archibald and Muckross club man Paul Griffin

Towey and Ciaran Lewis were dramatically rescued from the mid-Atlantic by a tanker earlier this year when the boat they were attempting to cross the Atlantic in was hit by a freak wave.

In this afternoon's race Great Britain led over the first 1000 metres but the second half turned into a struggle for supremacy between the Irish quartet and the eventual winners Germany.

Germany took gold in a time of 6.06.88 mins with the Irish only half a second down and two seconds clear of bronze medalists Australia.

The Irish four will now turn their attention towards the World Championships in August.

Earlier this morning the Irish heavy four of Cormac Folan, Sean Jacob, Con Collis and Alan Martin finished 3rd in their B final behind winners Italy, and runners up the Czech Republic, leaving them ninth overall in Munich.
