A delegation of TDs begins a visit to the Middle East today to meet representatives from Israel and the Palestinian territories.

The Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs, led by Dr Michael Woods, will be assessing the situation and discussing the prospects for reigniting peace talks in the region.

The delegation will meet members of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee, the head of the Palestinian Legislative Council Foreign Affairs Committee, and the Palestinian deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Abdullah Abdullah.

It will convey Irish support for "efforts towards a just and lasting peace", a delegation statement said.

Mr Bernard Allen, Mr Pat Carey, and Mr Michael D. Higgins will make up the rest of the delegation, which returns on Friday.
