Pat O'Hara has been appointed Executive Editor of The Irish Times

Pat O'Hara has been appointed Executive Editor of The Irish Times. He will have day-to-day responsibility to the editor for the content of the newspaper. Eoin McVey has been appointed Managing Editor, also responsible directly to the editor. Mr O'Hara has held a variety of senior executive positions including chief sub-editor, night editor and managing editor (content). Mr McVey has been editor of Business Extra and Administration and Planning Editor. Both Mr O'Hara and Mr McVey are directors of The Irish Times Ltd.

Willy Clingan has been appointed News Editor of The Irish Times. From Lisnaskea in Co Fermanagh, he joined the newspaper in 1976 as a news reporter from the Impartial Reporter in Enniskillen. In 1988 he became deputy property editor and helped launch The Irish Times property supplement. He has been a deputy news editor since 1995 and was appointed home news editor two years ago.

Paul O'Neill has been appointed Finance Editor. A native of Waterford city, he was a reporter with the News and Star before joining the Cork Examiner. He joined this newspaper in 1989, first in London, then in Dublin where he was crime correspondent 1993-95. A deputy news editor since 1995, he became business desk editor in 1997.

Noel Costello has been appointed Chief Sub-Editor. An economics graduate of TCD, he also has an MSc Econ in European Studies, and worked for the Irish Press for nine years before joining this newspaper. He has been deputy chief sub-editor of The Irish Times since 1991.

Kieran Fagan has been appointed Training Editor. He was features sub-editor of this newspaper 1979-81, chief sub-editor of the Sunday Tribune 1982, deputy chief sub-editor of the Irish Independent 1982-88, chief business sub-editor of The Irish Times 1988-91 and deputy systems editor 1991-95. He has been deputy news editor since 1995.

Niall Kiely, News Editor since 1994, has transferred to Administration Editor with responsibility for news budgets and resources, local industrial relations and human resources matters in editorial; he also succeeds Dr David Nowlan as Readers' Representative.

Cliff Taylor, Finance Editor since 1994, has been appointed Editor - New Media Development and will continue to have oversight of business, finance and economics coverage. John Hughes, Chief Sub-Editor since 1991, becomes Production Liaison Editor. In other changes, Sean Flynn is to become Education Editor with overall responsibility for educational news coverage, publications and educational services. Peter Murtagh moves to the editor's office and takes over from Sean Flynn as Opinion Page Editor. He will continue to carry responsibility for news features in the Saturday editions and for the direction of foreign news resources.
