'Irish Times' journalist wins award

Irish Times writer Sylvia Thompson has won print journalist of the year at the GlaxoSmithKline Irish Medical Media Awards.

Irish Timeswriter Sylvia Thompson has won print journalist of the year at the GlaxoSmithKline Irish Medical Media Awards.

Ms Thompson was recognised for the consistent quality of her writing on health issues and especially for a series of articles which tackled the stigma of mental illness. She writes regularly for The Irish Timeshealth supplement. It is the second time she has won a major award, having been chosen as the medical journalist of the year in 2005.

The journalist of the year award went to Dara Gantly from Medicine Weekly. Two awards were made for coverage of the Dr Michael Neary scandal. The broadcast award went to Tonightwith Vincent Browne on RTÉ Radio 1, while the regional print award went to Angela McCormick and Fiona Maggennis of the Drogheda Independent.
