Nearly two million visits were made abroad by Irish people between July and September this year in what was an increase of 12 per cent over the same period last year.
According to the Central Statistics Office's (CSO) third-quarter tourism and travel figures, the number of Irish residents travelling abroad on European routes grew by 18 per cent over last year.
Air cross-channel routes saw an increase of 10 per cent, however, the numbers travelling by ferries fell by 14 per cent during the same period.
The CSO figures also show there were over 2.3 million visits to Ireland, an increase of 6 per cent, between July and September this year.
The figures reveal that the number of visits by residents of Britain grew by 4 per cent, visits by residents of European countries grew by 13 per cent and visits by residents of the United States and Canada grew by 5 per cent.
However, the number of visits to Ireland by residents of other countries fell by 5,000 to 100,000.
