Police in Barcelona are investigating the circumstances of a young Irishman’s death in the city in the early hours of yesterday morning.

It is understood that Mark Ferguson (24) from Rathkip, Ballina, died as a result of a fall from a balcony.

Mr. Ferguson had travelled to Barcelona with friends for a music festival at the weekend.

The Department of Foreign Affairs is in contact with the man's family in Ballina and are providing consular assistance.

A post mortem was to have been held in Barcelona today. The remains are not expected to be repatriated for several days.

Friends and neighbours of the dead youth have been calling to his family home since Monday since news of the tragedy filtered through to sympathise with the dead man's parents, John and Kathleen.

The couple have five other children.

Local Fianna Fáil TD Dara Calleary said the thoughts of the entire Ballina community were with the Ferguson family on their grievous loss.

"The Ferguson family are highly regarded and over the years John has been a tremendous community activist", Deputy Calleary stated.
