AN IRISH tourist has died in Lanzarote in the Canary islands after a late-night swim in a pool.
The 20-year-old Dublin man, named locally as Keith Murphy, drowned during the early hours of yesterday morning in the pool of the complex in which he and friends from Ireland were staying.
Emergency services were called to the complex in Puerto del Carmen just before 5am and tried in vain to resuscitate Mr Murphy. He had been pulled from the pool a short time before by his friends.
According to local media, the group had arrived in Lanzarote the previous day.
A spokesman for the Department of Foreign Affairs said it was offering consular assistance. It may take several days for his body to be flown home.
Last August, 18-year-old Derek Cumiskey, also from Dublin, died in Puerto del Carmen after being attacked outside a fast-food restaurant.
