A post-mortem examination has confirmed that the body found in Australia on Saturday morning is that of Irishman Niall McDonough, 30, who went missing on June 12th.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said that they are continuing to provide consular assistance to his family. His parents, brother and sister arrived in Australia on June 17th to aid in the search.

Mr McDonough was last seen by his girlfriend as he left a backpacker's hostel in the northern town of Byron Bay to go for a walk on a Friday evening. A member of the public located some of Mr McDonough's belongings on a park bench near the Cape Byron lighthouse early on Saturday morning.

There was an intensive land, air and sea search for two days following his disappearance, and scaled-back searches continued until Australian police called them off last Wednesday. Shortly after 8.30am on Saturday lifesavers from Brunswick Heads retrieved a body from the water.

Police said the death is not being treated as suspicious. Neither police or The Department of Foreign Affairs could say where he was from in Ireland.
