THE assistant director of the National Gallery of Ireland, Dr Brian Kennedy, is widely predicted to be appointed director of the National Gallery of Australia. The appointment will be made by the Australian government next week.

Dr Kennedy has worked in the European Commission, the Department of Finance and the Chester Beatty Library. His books include the controversial study of arts policy in Ireland, Dreams and Responsibilities. His time at the National Gallery has seen a substantial refurbishment of the Merrion Square gallery and a number of successful touring exhibitions from its collection. Dublin born Dr Kennedy is married with two children.
