Republic of Ireland veteran and Manchester United full-back Denis Irwin is set to leave Old Trafford for a new challenge at Gianluca's Vialli's Watford.

The 35-year-old is out of contract with the Premiership champions and is therefore permitted to leave the club for free.

Irwin confirmed Watford's interest today to SkySports admitting that he has already been talking with senior staff at Vicarage Road.

"I've chatted with first-team coach Ray Wilkins and he's confirmed that Watford are interested in me," said the Cork man.

"But it is still early days yet - there are other options to be considered before I make a decision over the next few days.

"A number of clubs have made inquiries but I still have an open mind of what I should do."

The former Oldham man has spent 11 years at Manchester United and has been generally recognised as one of their most respected and valued players.
