An appeal by ISPAT against an order under the Fire Services Act 1981, requiring it to bring the main office complex at the steel plant in Cork Harbour into line with fire safety standards, was adjourned at Cobh District Court until next week.

Following a fire and explosion on January 15th in which an ISPAT employee died, the fire authorities served notice on the company that its four-storey off ice building - which was not involved in the fatal fire - was below safety standards.

Judge Michael Patwell heard the company had moved to comply with a number of the required safety improvements and tenders had been invited for work on others. The judge said he would enter the appeal for mention at Mallow District Court, sitting at Blarney on Tuesday next.

ISPAT is also appealing against the provisions of a pollution control licence issued by the Environmental Protection Agency on January 12th. A spokesman for ISPAT said yesterday the company was in continuing discussions with Cork fire authorities.
