Union leaders will meet with ISPAT management this afternoon in a final attempt to prevent the closure of the Cork steel plant.
ISPAT, formerly Irish Steel, announced the closure of the plant last Friday with the loss of 400 jobs. Workers met on Saturday to discuss a response to the company's announcement.
SIPTU, which represents 250 of the 400 employees concerned says it does not accept the decision to close the plant is irreversible.
SIPTU general secretary Mr John McDonnell said yesterday the union would consult the Departments of Finance andEnterprise and Employment to determine whether the plant could be saved by EU funds without breaking EU laws.
