The Israeli army said today it had arrested the head of the radical Islamic movement Hamas for the northern West Bank region around Jenin, one of the towns the army has re-occupied.

Troops arrested Mazen Fukha overnight in Tubas, around 15 kilometres (nine miles) southeast of Jenin, an army spokesman said.

Israeli public radio quoted security sources as saying he was responsible for planning the suicide bombing of a bus in northern Israel yesterday which killed nine Israelis and injured dozens more.
