The Israeli army destroyed three houses and arrested an activist from Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement during raids this morning.

Around 30 tanks and three bulldozers took part in the operation in the Palestinian self-ruled town of Rafah on the Israeli-controlled border with Egypt.

Elsewhere, in the West Bank, the Israeli army destroyed three homes in the Balata refugee camp in Nablus in the north.

One of the houses dynamited belonged to Fatah militant Mohammed Abu Zur, accused by Israel of having taken part in an attack on a Jewish settlement.

The blast also destroyed two nearby homes.

In addition, the Israeli army arrested a militant from Islamic Jihad who they claimed was preparing a car bomb.

Fourteen Palestinians were arrested by Israeli securityovernight in towns across the West Bank. AFP
