Italy recorded a trade deficit of €388 million with European Union countries in April compared with a revised deficit of €683 million in March.
Italy's accumulated trade deficit for the first four months of the year with EU countries stood at €2.270 billion compared with a revised €2.549 billion deficit in the same period in 2003.
Official statistics agency ISTAT said figures would be revised from May to take account of the recent EU enlargement when 10 countries joined the bloc.
In terms of global trade, Italy recorded a trade deficit of €27 million in April from a revised trade surplus of €683 million in March.
