Former European Commissioner Ms Emma Bonino, who has been on a hunger strike for five days, has been admitted to hospital.
Ms Bonino (53) was taken to Sao Paolo hospital in Milan last night. She was still refusing food, along with medication.
A leader of the small Radical Party, Ms Bonino is protesting the scant coverage she says television has been giving small parties contesting the May 13th Italian general election.
Much of the state television coverage of the campaign has focused on conservative media magnate Mr Silvio Berlusconi and his centre-left challenger for premier, former Rome mayor Mr Francesco Rutelli.
