London - A 72-year-old man who was voted Britain's "Lollipop Man of the Year" was yesterday jailed for five years for sex attacks on children.

A London court found Ernest Donald guilty of 16 charges involving children aged between six and 12. The offences took place over a four-year period.

Donald, of Fulham, west London, was voted top school crossing person by radio listeners in London last year. He also received the British Empire Medal from Queen Elizabeth in 1980 for 26 years' service as a school-bus driver.

He was found guilty of attempted rape, indecent assault and indecency.
