Jamaica seeks aid to tackle violence

Kingston - Jamaica's prime minister said yesterday he had sought foreign aid to help restore order in the capital

Kingston - Jamaica's prime minister said yesterday he had sought foreign aid to help restore order in the capital. Twenty people have been killed in three days of gun battles between police and residents of a poor Kingston neighbourhood.

Prime Minister P.J. Patterson said the former British colony was negotiating with other countries for outside help in restoring order.

Police said 20 people had been confirmed dead and 30 injured in the unrest that flared after a police raid on Saturday for illegal weapons in west Kingston, an area that has seen escalating gun violence.
