Sounds of the city died away as the lift rose to the Harcourt Building penthouse. Dublin was only a backdrop at a party this week where friends and well-wishers gathered to view the latest creations from John Rocha.
His new range of jewellery goes on sale in 30 different outlets from today. "It's great when people have the confidence in me to create things," said the soft-spoken Rocha, who was there with his wife, Odette, and their son, Max (12). His aim, always, he explains, is "to make people happy".
The next few months will fly by as Rocha sets about designing for a new 300-apartment development in Birmingham. London Fashion Week is in September, and a book about himself and the last 10 years, is planned for October. Bono is writing the foreword and it will be published by Conrad Octopus in London. He expects "a big bash in Dublin" to celebrate its publication.
The British Ambassador, Sir Ivor Roberts and his wife, Lady Elizabeth Roberts, chatted to Rocha, who was the recipient of a Commander of the British Empire honour, from Queen Elizabeth earlier this year.
Talk turned to the 4th of July celebrations at the US ambassador's residence in the Phoenix Park with Neil Diamond headlining.
Gary and Brian Pillow, the brothers and joint owners of TJH Ltd, jewellery manufacturers, thanked Rocha for "being so down to earth and such a pleasure to work with". Singer Paul Brady and designer Michael Mortell came to salute their friend.
And, yes, there was time, in spite of the dizzy heights of the penthouse views and the champagne, to admire the silver and gold jewellery. Never fear, On the Town remained focused at all times.
