The World Jewish Congress has announced it will set up a monitoring center to confront what it called "unprecedented violent anti-Semitism" in Europe.

In a statement, the group said it was holding a special meeting in Brussels today and tomorrow, bringing together more than 100 Jewish community leaders from 25 countries.

"The WJC has convened in Brussels because Europe is leading the anti-Israel campaign ... and has become the hotbed of a new and unprecedented violent anti-Semitism," its secretary general Avi Beker said.

The proposed monitoring center would study European press coverage of Israel, relay Israeli government views, and serve as a "central, organized point of reference for Jewish activists," a proposal said.

It would be affiliated with the European Jewish Congress in Paris, and coordinate actions with the New York-based WJC, founded in 1936 as an umbrella group for Jewish organizations worldwide.

Taking part in the Brussels meeting were Israel's deputy foreign minister Michael Melchior, Jerusalem Mayor Ehud Olmert, and Knesset (parliamentary) speaker Avraham Burg.
