A pair of boxer shorts belonging to former US President John F Kennedy took pride of place in the window of Louis Copeland's menswear shop in Dublin today.

The white shorts, worn by JFK during his stint in the US navy during World War Two, were snapped up at a recent auction in New York by an Irish fan for $5,000.

Kennedy became a hero in the war after surviving the sinking of his patrol boat, which went down in the Solomon Islands after a Japanese destroyer sliced through it.

"Judging by the condition of the shorts, he may have been wearing them during that trip," quipped Mr Louis Copeland.

The underpants have the name of the late president stitched into the waistband.

"Obviously, Mrs Kennedy (his mother) was a hoarder - she collected everything he wore," said Mr Copeland.

Along with a dress shirt once owned by Kennedy, the shorts will eventually be sent to a museum dedicated to his memory in Boston.
