555 Job Cuts - May

Dell Computers offers voluntary redundancy to 200 workers in Limerick. Guinness Staff in Dundalk accept severance packages and 140 jobs go. Peerless Rugs in Athy, Co Kildare closes with the loss of 65 jobs. Wexal aluminium plant in Enniscorthy closes with the loss of 150 jobs.

1,648 Job Cuts - June

Irish Ispat - the former Irish Steel - shuts with the loss of 400 jobs. GE Capital Woodchester in Dublin cuts 143 of 500 jobs. Dell Computers announces another 275 voluntary redundancies in Limerick and Bray, Co Wicklow. Ericsson cuts 100 jobs in Dublin. In Wexford 120 people lose their jobs when Wexford Weaving goes into liquidation and separately Wexford Electronix sheds 30 staff. Nortel announces that 330 jobs will go in Belfast. Baltimore Technologies says 250 will go in restructuring.

727 Job Cuts - July

Intel seeks up to 170 voluntary redundancies at its Leixlip plant. Molex, a Snannon based electronics group sheds 100 workers. Coats Viyella announced the closure of its Lisnakea plant with the loss of 140 jobs. Kylemore closes its bakery and chain of shops laying off 317.

1,789 Job Cuts - August

Gateway closes its European plant at Clonshuagh with the loss of 900 jobs. General Semiconductors in Macroom, Co Cork announces it is to close by Christmas making 670 redundant. Trend Technologies in Clondalkin lays off 100 while another electronics company, SMTC in Gweedore, sheds 69 jobs. Up to fifty jobs go at Fujsawa pharmaceuticals in Killorglin, Co Kerry.

2,347 Job Cuts - September

Montupet, the French car components, makes 97 people redundant at its Calcast plant in Derry. First-e, the internet bank closes with the loss of 250 jobs. Bombardier announces that up to 2,000 jobs could go at Shorts in Belfast.

4,259 Job Cuts - October

Aer Lingus unveils restructuring plan which involves the loss of over 2,000 staff. Waterford Crystal puts most of its 1,600 staff on a three day week. MPC, a Monaghan poultry company closes with the loss of 300 jobs. Analog Devices in Limerick makes 94 people redundant and Nortel announces another 265 redundancies at plants in Republic and the North.

1,175 Job Cuts - November 1st

Tara Mines lays off 700 workers and Dundalk car component maker AFL closes with the loss of 300 jobs. Tusa, the supermarket bank says it is to close with the loss of 75 jobs. Braun announces it is to lay off 100 temporary workers at its Carlow plant.
