Boxing: Roy Jones Jr expects to fight two-weight world champion Joe Calzaghe in September in the Welshman's farewell fight.
Unbeaten Calzaghe and legendary American Jones have reached an initial agreement to stage their showdown later this year - probably in Cardiff - when they intend to split the promotional duties between themselves.
The 36-year-old Calzaghe, who will relinquish his WBC super-middleweight title to fight Jones rather than defend against mandatory challenger Carl Froch, will retire after the lucrative clash with the four-weight world champion.
While the fight is expected to be rubber-stamped within the next two weeks, Jones has indicated he expects the contest to be staged on September 20.
He told www.boxingtalk.com: "Calzaghe and I are going to be fighting this fall. They are holding September 20th or November 15th for us, but right now it's looking like September 20."
Calzaghe made the long-awaited move up to light-heavyweight in April to beat Bernard Hopkins and earn recognition as the world's premier 175lb fighter — in addition to his status as undisputed super-middleweight champion, holding the WBC, WBA and WBO titles.
The likelihood of Calzaghe giving up the WBC belt means Nottingham rival Froch is almost certain to fight for the vacant title.
