Roy Jones Jr strolled to a unanimous points decision over Mexico's Julio Gonzalez to retain his WBC, WBA and IBF world light-heavyweight titles in Los Angeles.

In front of a crowd of 20,409 at the Staples Arena, Jones floored Gonzalez in the first, fifth and last rounds.

But the champion was jeered in the later rounds as he failed to finish off the 24-year-old, who earned 500,000US dollars for his gutsy performance. Jones received in excess of 1.5million dollars.

Jones dominated every round and the judges scored the fight 119-106 118-107 119-106.

In the post-match interview, Jones said: "He was strong and he had heart. I had to wear him down.

"My plan was to work the body, wear him down. I had too much respect to go for the quick knockout." Gonzalez said: "Quick, strong, however you want to put it, he beat me." - PA
