Jordan today rubbished a report today that team founder Eddie Jordan is set to sell the Formula One team to American energy drink giants Red Bull.

The sale of the Silverstone-based outfit was the reason Eddie Irvine was not signed by the team, it was claimed.

Irvine said yesterday talks had broken down and he would not compete in 2003.

But Jordan's director of marketing Mark Gallagher. said: "There's absolutely nothing in that. We are not discussing the sale of the team to anyone.

"We've made no secret of the fact we are having sponsorship discussions with a number of major brands but as regards selling the team, that's not on the agenda."

Meanwhile, Ralph Firman will discover next week if he has made his Formula One breakthrough after emerging as one of the main candidates for the vacant seat at Jordan.

The 27-year-old reigning Formula Nippon champion is battling with Brazil's Felipe Massa for the last remaining place on the grid.

"I think Massa is favourite. He's in plum position because he has heavy backing, but perhaps nothing has been officially signed yet," Firman said today.

"I'd love to be in Formula One, it's what I've always dreamed of. It would be great to race against guys like Juan Pablo Montoya, Nick Heidfeld and Jarno Trulli who I raced against in Formula Three.

"But I'm due to go back to Japan on Tuesday and race in the GT and Formula Nippon series again this year so we'll see what happens."

Massa, out of work following last year's maiden season in Formula One with Sauber, is considered favourite because he can bring the necessary £3million-plus sponsorship to the team with his backing by Ford of Brazil and oil company Petrobras.

But Jordan's sponsors Benson & Hedges are keen to get a British driver on board for the new season and Firman fits the bill.

The Norwich-born racer won the British Formula Three title in 1996 before moving to Japan, where he won in the GT Championship and then romped to the Formula Nippon crown last year.
