Among those in attendance were the Editor of The Irish Times, Mr Conor Brady; Mr Liam Kelly, journalist, who gave the reading; and colleagues and friends from The Irish Times, RTE, the Irish Independent, the Examiner and the former Irish Press.

Mr Cathal O'Shannon, journalist and broadcaster, paid tribute to Mr Smyllie, describing him as a good reporter who wrote well and fast and accurately. He was the third generation of a journalistic dynasty, a solid background.

"The Pat Smyllie I knew came from that now almost obsolete and archaic generation of journalists that got their training on the job. They knew no schools of journalism or university courses. "He could write like an angel. His Pro-Quidnunc pieces in the Irishman's Diary were bright, observant, amusing."

Mr Smyllie joined The Irish Times as a junior reporter in 1956. He left the paper in 1968 to work in Britain and Northern Ireland. He returned in the 1970s after a period in the Irish Press and was night town editor and assistant news editor before leaving to pursue a career in public relations. He was the nephew of a former editor of The Irish Times, Mr Bertie Smyllie. His father, Donald, was chief sub-editor for many years.
