Journalists at Independent Newspapers will today meet to discuss amendments to the pay offer drawn up by union representatives and management during negotiations yesterday. Amendments were made which will go to a vote of members of the National Union of Journalists.

Independent Newspapers journalists have overwhelmingly rejected a revised pay offer. . Their main concern is that the proposals do not provide for increases in excess of national wage agreement terms.

The protective notice issued by management to its 650 staff, in response to threatened strike action by clerical staff, has been rescinded.

Mr Declan Carlyle, human resources manager at Independent Newspapers, said yesterday he was happy that the matter had been settled.

"We also hope to reach a satisfactory outcome with the journalists," he added.

SIPTU served formal seven day strike notice on November 17th but lifted it a week later after the Labour Court rejected the union's 5 per cent pay claim.

Management subsequently lifted protective notices and the union has accepted a recommendation by the Labour Relations Commission.

The industrial dispute was resolved only three days before the start of production at the company's new printing press at Citywest in west Dublin.
