Olympics - Boxing: John Joe Joyce emulated team captain Kenny Egan this morning with an impressive win to reach the next round of the light-welterweight division.
While not as emphatic as Egan's light heavyweight victory yesterday, Joyce led throughout against world number eight Gyula Kate and posted a 9-5 win .
Joyce had lost all three previous meetings with the powerful Hungarian but asserted himself from the first bell at the Workers' Gymnasium.
From behind a solid defence, Joyce produced a neat display to edge the opening two rounds before extending his advantage with a 3-0 whitewash in the third.
Aware that he was behind on the scorecards, there was an element of desperation about Kate in the final round and all too often his wild swings were of the target as Joyce kept himself out of range.
The win sets up a meeting with Felix Diaz of the Dominican Republic who had earlier overcome Armenia's Eduard Hambardzumyan.
