Judge `gone off' sentencing

A Dublin judge said she had gone off sentencing people because the temporary release system made a joke of it

A Dublin judge said she had gone off sentencing people because the temporary release system made a joke of it. Judge Gillian Hussey was dealing with a case in which Veronica Gilsenen (32), of Boot Road, Clondalkin, had pleaded guilty to stealing two pairs of jeans from Clerys on April 5th and using a stolen cheque to obtain goods and cash from Quinnsworth, Clondalkin, on May 4th.

Ms Gilsenen, who has a drugs problem, had been in custody for three weeks and "looks the better for it", said Judge Hussey. Ms Gilsenen said she wanted to get her case finished and start a sentence, but Judge Hussey said: "I've gone off sentencing people on drugs. I'm getting so fed up recycling them when they are let out on TR. It makes a joke and a farce of courts." She remanded Ms Gilsenen in custody to October 10th for a urine test and probation report.
