A Circuit Court judge told a 19-year-old man who married his pregnant girlfriend last Wednesday – the day before he was due to be sentenced for slashing a barman’s face with a knife – that he was not impressed by people who used conception or marriage when facing serious charges.

John Ross Mongan, of 208 Lurgan Park, Renmore, Galway, was sentenced to two years and six months for the attack.

He pleaded guilty before Galway Circuit Criminal Court yesterday to assaulting Kieran Hanley at Murty Rabbitte’s pub, Forster Street, Galway on March 18th last year.

His mother, Winifred Mongan (37) pleaded guilty to biting Mr Hanley’s finger as he tried to eject her and the rest of her family from the pub on the night.
