ALREADY the first lot of summerflowering perennials have spent their blooms. Many of these - delphiniums and lupins for instance - will produce a second flush later on if the flowering stalks are cut right back now and the plants are given a good feeding and watering. Delphiniums are especially greedy, and love nothing more than well rotted manure.

While you are working at ground level, keep an eye out for self sown seedlings of many different plants. If they are not in a suitable place, pot them up, label them and give them away, or transplant them to another part of the garden.
