LONDON - Ministers were under pressure last night to reopen the case of the four men convicted of killing newspaper boy Carl Bridgewater.

A second juror at the original trial cast doubt on the safety of the convictions, adding to grave reservations already expressed by the jury foreman and chief prosecutor. The Home Office said new evidence filed by lawyers was being considered by officials but refused to speculate on the chances of a fresh appeal.

Carl (13) was shot dead after apparently interrupting a burglary at an isolated Staffordshire farmhouse in 1978.
