The jury in the inquest into the death of Brian Murphy has returned a unanimous verdict of death by unlawful killing.

Mr Murphy (18), from Clonskeagh, Dublin, died from head injuries following an assault outside Club Anabel in the Burlington Hotel in 2000.

A decision made in July by the Director of Public Prosecution that no further prosecutions in relation to the death of Mr Murphy would be sought paved the way for the inquest to resume.

In the 2004, two men were convicted of violent disorder, and one man, Dermot Laide, was convicted of manslaughter and violent disorder in relation to Mr Murphy's death.

But the manslaughter charge was later overturned on appeal and a retrial ordered.

In April of last year a nolle prosequi(no prosecution) was entered by the State in Laide's case because of "ongoing evidential difficulties". The nolle prosequi had left it open for the State to re-enter charges at any time.
