There has been fresh speculation surrounding the future of Spurs and Republic of Ireland striker Robbie Keane after the arrival of Eidur Gudjohnsen to White Hart Lane. The Monaco striker has joined Tottenham on loan until the end of the season, manager Harry Redknapp confirmed today.
The former Chelsea and Barcelona star underwent a medical with the club yesterday and joins an attacking line-up which already includes Keane, Jermain Defoe, Peter Crouch and Roman Pavlyuchenko.
"He's a player I've always admired," said Redknapp. "He can play several positions and is a very clever footballer.
"It was his decision to come to us. I rang him and left a message on his phone and he came back to me and said I want to come to Tottenham.
"He gives us lots of options. He is a top player."
The Tottenham boss also confirmed that Birmingham were in talks for Russian striker Pavlyuchenko but, added: "We're not keen to sell him. We're happy with him. Technically he's a terrific player."
That would suggest that it is Keane who is surplus to requirements considering the similarities he shares with Gudjohnsen as a player.
Both can play between the lines or up front but the Iceland player may provide more of a physical presence than the Dubliner, who according to the Daily Mail, has been offfered to Celtic and West Ham.
Both are in the market for a striker but whether either could afford Keane's wages is another matter, opening the possibility of the striker moving out on loan with Spurs footing a significant part of the bill.
