Some 40 boxes of the writings and history notes of unpublished works by the late Jim Kemmy were yesterday placed in the new £50 million Glucksman Library at the University of Limerick.

The ceremony also marked the unveiling of a portrait of Dr John Geary, the 19th century superintendent of the Limerick Fever and Lock Hospital, now St John's, about whom Mr Kemmy had written extensively. The Haverty painting was presented by an anonymous donor as a tribute to the Limerick politician.

The collected papers were placed in the library beside the Dunraven papers and some 70 boxes of the Knight of Glin papers.

Mr John Logan, of the University History Department, said: "We were very lucky to have the Jim Kemmy papers, which could easily have been sold off and lost. They are invaluable to anyone working on a history of the Democratic Socialist Party or Jim Kemmy himself."
