Racing:Today's race meetings at Lingfield and Kempton have both been abandoned due to snow-related safety issues with tomorrow's meeting at the latter also in doubt.
The track at Kempton currently raceable but heavy snow in the area has left the Sunbury venue inaccessible.
Ambulances and medical staff due to be on service at the meeting cannot get to the track, leaving clerk of the course Barney Clifford with no option but to abandon following three inspections.
"Unfortunately we've had to abandon, it is snowing very heavy again here now," reported Clifford. "The main problem is inaccessibility for officials such as ambulance men and doctors.
"We've given it every chance but the weather has beaten us. We had to give it time.
"The forecast is for more heavy snow so we will be inspecting for Thursday's meeting and we'll confirm a time for that later on Wednesday."
It was a similar story at Lingfield where the track would have been raceable but four inches of overnight snow left the Surrey venue, and its surrounding areas, treacherous for the general public.
“We’ve had to abandon on safety grounds,” reported clerk of the course Neil MacKenzie Ross.
“We would have been fine to race, but the course is inaccessible due to the conditions.
“I’ve already spoken to a lot of trainers who would have been unable to make the journey to the track because of the snow.”
Saturday's National Hunt meeting at Sedgefield has also been abandoned after a noon inspection was brought forward.
Clerk of the course Charlie Moore had announced an inspection earlier in the week due to an adverse forecast.
"We've abandoned, it was one of our more straightforward decisions," said Moore. We've currently got up to six inches of snow on the track and more is forecast.
"Our next fixture is January 26th so we are hoping for a thaw before then."
Leopardstown's meeting on Sunday, featuring the MCR Hurdle, is also under threat due to adverse weather.
Conditions have deteriorated in Ireland and the showcase contest, formerly run as the Pierse Hurdle, is in jeopardy along with the rest of the card.
"It's been a very cold morning here. We had a light dusting of snow again on Monday night and quite a severe frost," said Leopardstown general manager Tom Burke.
"At the moment the course is not raceable. It had improved a bit over the weekend, but the frost put us back a bit.
"Our night temperature is going down to minus two or minus three, and daytime getting up to two or three at best.
"Unfortunately the forecast going forward is not great - this is supposed to continue well into next week. At the moment we are monitoring on a daily basis and taking it from there."
Punchestown's meeting on Saturday is also in doubt. The course is currently unfit for racing because of snow.
In Scotland Ayr's fixture on Monday is already under threat, with an inspection called for 11am tomorrow.
The track is frozen and under three inches of snow, with prospects of the meeting taking place looking slim.
"There's three inches of snow on the track, which is also frozen solid, and the temperatures are going to be freezing - day and night - all week," said clerk of the course Hazel Peplinski.
"There is no glimmer of hope from the Met Office whatsoever so it's looking grim.
"It's not going to happen and we're going through the motions."
