Republic of Ireland international Jeff Kenna is determined to win a new deal with Birmingham City as he prepares to face his former club Blackburn in Saturday's FA Cup clash at St Andrews.

Kenna, who signed on a free transfer from Ewood Park two years ago, is out of contract in the summer along with several other Blues players including Nico Vaesen, Bryan Hughes, Stern John and Jovan Kirovski.

Birmingham manager Steve Bruce has insisted that no talks will take place about contracts until Premiership survival has been guaranteed.

Kenna said: "I am out of contract in the summer. I just have to see if the club are going to offer me another one. There are half a dozen of us in the same boat.

"The club have said they don't to talk about new deals until they know which division they are going to be in next season.

"That's their prerogative but ultimately I'll just have to look after myself and see what happens. I'd like to stay and I certainly don't see us being in the First Division next year.

"From my point of view, it would be great if I could have another year in the Premiership with Birmingham."

Kenna missed only one match last season despite suffering from an Achilles problem but was left out of the side after the first four matches with Damien Johnson and Olivier Tebily sharing the right-back duties.

But he earned a recall for the home clash with Blackburn in early December and has cemented his place in recent weeks.

He said: "The manager picks the team. If he feels I am not doing the business, it's his prerogative to leave me out.

"I played a few games in the reserves and then, fair play to the manager, he felt it right to bring me back into the side. I hope I can justify his faith in me.

I certainly I feel I've merited my place with my last few performances. Hopefully I can stay in the team and give the manager something to think about."
