National Football League round-up: Tadhg Kennelly's first senior appearance in a Kerry jersey was a winning one this afternoon as the Kingdom overcame Derry 0-12 to 0-10 in Bellaghy.
Back in Kerry after a decade plying his trade in Sydney, Kennelly made his bow as a second half substitute as his side moved level with Galway, winners against Tyrone last night, at the top of Division One.
While the day was significant for Kennelly, it belonged to Colin Cooper who led from the front with six points. After an electric start, which saw the home side kick four unanswered points, Derry lost their way when Eoin Bradley was yellow-carded and the sides were level at the break.
Kerry maintained the pressure after the break, with two Cooper frees helping establish a three-point lead and despite battling gamely Damien Cassidy’s side were unable to get back on terms.
In Ballyshannon, Dublin made the most of a howling gale in the first-half to open a 0-7 to 0-1 lead over Donegal.
Predictably, the home side came back into the contest with the wind at their backs and a 50th-minute goal by Conall Dunne helped level matters at 0-11 to 1-8. However, instead of pressing on for the win, Donegal found themselves on the back foot as late scores from Ger Brennan and Ross McConnell gave Dublin a 0-13 to 1-8 victory.
In today’s final Division One clash, Mayo’s first win of the season leaves Westmeath in the mire. Trevor Mortimor was on target for the home side as Mayo ran out 1-13 to 0-8 winners.
