Taoiseach Enda Kenny with the leaders of the Opposition parties this morning to brief them on the outcome of the European summit.

Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin, Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams and Catherine Murphy of the Dail’s technical group met with Mr Kenny at Government Buildings.

Speaking to reporters following this morning's meeting, the Fianna Fail leader said he told the Taoiseach the euro deal "doesn't address core issues". Mr Martin said he pressed the Taoiseach to keep bank debt front and centre in future EU negotiations.

Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams said he was "deeply concerned" over what Mr Kenny had told him.

"I listened carefully to what the Taoiseach had to say this morning. I am deeply concerned that he has signed an agreement that will have long lasting and negative consequences for ordinary citizens in Ireland and across the EU.

"Clearly this deal will not resolve the euro zone crisis and in fact will make matters worse.

"The Government has signed up to a new and draconian 0.5per cent of GDP deficit limit. They have done this without having conducted an assessment of the social or economic consequences of such a move.

"The agreement also requires this new austerity rule to be put into constitutional law. This means that the Government will have to implement austerity budgets not just to 2015 as required by the EU/IMF programme, but for its full term of office and beyond.

"Alongside this, the agreement explicitly rules out any future debt write-downs. This means that all toxic-banking debts will be paid, including the €3.1bn due to be paid to Anglo Irish Bank next March and every year for more than a decade. Once again the taxpayer will have to foot the bill, irrespective of the social and human cost.
