EUROPEAN COMMISSION:EUROPEAN COMMISSION chief José Manuel Barroso has told Taoiseach Enda Kenny he can count on the commission's support as he strives to overcome the State's economic crisis.

In a message of congratulation issued shortly after Mr Kenny was elected by the Dáil, Mr Barroso wished the Taoiseach every success “in one of the most challenging times” in recent Irish history.

Mr Kenny will meet Mr Barroso this evening in Brussels on the eve of a crucial euro zone summit on reforms to the bailout fund. The two men had talks last week in Helsinki and Mr Kenny also met Mr Barroso during the course of the election campaign.

“The fiscal and reform efforts that are being made by the Irish people are very much appreciated,” Mr Barroso said.

“Ireland is not alone in facing economic and financial difficulties at this particular time. Other European governments are facing similar situations to a greater or lesser degree.” Mr Barroso said it was a key strength of the EU system that member states and institutions can work together to find solutions to problems. “I am very much looking forward to working with you in this spirit and in an open, friendly and constructive way to help your Government steer Ireland out of the current crisis and back on the path to recovery and sustainable growth.”

European Parliament president Jerzy Buzek also sent his best wishes, saying he looked forward to working with the new Government.

“The results of February 28th election in Ireland are an expression of a clear mandate from the Irish people for new leadership of their country by the Fine Gael/Labour coalition in this particularly difficult time,” Mr Buzek said.

“The European Parliament, as the only directly-elected EU institution, remains close to the needs and concerns of the 500 million citizens of our union.

“Ireland has long demonstrated a tremendous commitment to our common European project and it is important that European solidarity be shown to Irish citizens at this time.”
