Taoiseach Enda Kenny said today he does not contemplate the failure of the euro or the break-up of the euro zone.
Speaking in the Dáil this afternoon, he said the situation in Greece seemed to have focused more clearly on what the future held there.
The decision by the Italian parliament might well decide what direction it wanted to take in the future, he added.
“The very strong feeling at the meeting of the euro zone leaders was to make the decisions politically that are necessary to deal with this comprehensively,’’ said Mr Kenny.
The Taoiseach was replying to Independent TD Shane Ross who asked what Government plans existed to deal with a possible collapse of the euro.
“The people of Ireland and this House would like to know that the Government has plans in place for this particular catastrophe happening," Mr Ross said. “It is now not necessarily a likelihood, but it is a real possibility.’’
Mr Kenny said that if there was a crisis in the euro zone, a special European council meeting would be called.
“I believe, very strongly, that the European leadership will deal with this politically," he added.
