GOVERNMENT DEALS:FINE GAEL leader Enda Kenny said he would publish any agreement made with Independents if the situation arose and the party found itself in a position to form a new administration.
Mr Kenny said yesterday he has not ruled out Fine Gael forming a government with the support of Independents if the party secures enough seats. He said his party had ruled out sharing power with Fianna Fáil and Sinn Féin.
“If that honour and privilege comes my way . . . deals like that should, of course, be made public,” he said.
Interviewed on the RTÉ Radio programme This Week, Mr Kenny said it was a time for a strong government and stability.
Asked about party colleague Phil Hogan’s stated preference on Saturday for a Fine Gael government supported by like-minded Independents, he replied: “I suppose I would not be truthful if I said that any political leader would not like to have the maximum number of seats they can get.”
Asked if such an arrangement would be stable, Mr Kenny said: “I think what is needed here is strong government for the country and the people.” Mr Kenny said that issue would be dealt with in accordance with the reality of what the people decided on polling day.
People saw a huge disconnect between politics and their lives, and the entire language of politics had to change, he said.
Mr Kenny revealed that he is travelling to Germany today to brief German chancellor Angela Merkel on the Irish economy.
