Five years after guiding the Orchard County to All-Ireland glory Joe Kernan has tonight stepped down as Armagh manager.

The Crossmaglen man reached the pinnacle by lifting the Sam Maguire in 2002 in his first season in charge. However, this year saw Armagh bow out when they were beaten by Donegal in the Ulster Championship before the final nail in this campaign came with defeat to Derry in the qualifiers.

"I'd like to think we were successful - people would maybe say we underachieved and if we did then so be it," reflected Kernan to the BBC of his six-year reign.

"We brought a lot of joy and happiness and I think we were good for the GAA.  We got the blood boiling in a lot of people and certainly brought a lot of entertainment."
