Kerry 1-12 Monaghan 1-11: Kerry denied Monaghan a famous result with a late comeback at Croke Park this afternoon but the All-Ireland champions were given an almighty scare by Séamus McEnaney's unfancied side.
Monaghan were given little hope coming into the match but came within minutes of pulling off the upset, a ring rusty Kerry requiring three late unanswered scores to scrape through.
Monaghan set about their task with real purpose, Thomas Freeman Rory Woods knocking over early points before Ciaran Hanratty won a penalty, which was coolly dispatched by Freeman.
Kerry, on the other hand, were struggling to get into their stride and relied on frees from Mike Frank Russell to get a foothold in the game.
Kieran Donaghy, superbly shackled by the Monaghan full-back line and John Paul Mone in particular, was unable to make an impact while Colm Cooper was limited to a handful of opportunities.
Indeed, it was rough justice on the Ulster side that their superiority wasn't reflected on the scoreboard at half-time, the teams level at 1-5 to 0-8.
Monaghan picked up where they left off after the break, Freeman, Woods and Hanratty all scoring points but were pegged back when a Declan O'Sullivan's goal brought the Kingdom level.
But again Monaghan pulled clear only for Kerry substitute Bryan Sheehan to grab two points and level matters before Tomas O Se's late score earned the defending champions a passage into the semi-finals.
