A senior Kerry footballer was summonsed to appear at a District Court yesterday on four charges.

A senior Kerry footballer was summonsed to appear at a District Court yesterday on four charges.

Aidan O'Mahony, Mounthorgan, Rathmore, Co Kerry, who plays as a defender for his county, appeared at Killarney District Court in Co Kerry on a charge of assault, on a charge of obstructing a garda in the course of his duty, and two allegations of breach of the peace.

Mr O'Mahony is charged with assaulting Damien Casey at Main Street, Killarney, on January 2nd last and with obstructing Garda Edmund Walsh, contrary to the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act 1994.

There are two further charges relating to threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour in breach of the peace, one at 1am and a second at 2.30am, at Main Street, Killarney, also on January 2nd, contrary to the Public Order Act.

Mr O'Mahony's solicitor Pádraig O'Connell said the case would be "fully contested".

Judge James O'Connor made an order granting the release of statements and any video-tapes and technological material that might be available to Mr O'Mahony's legal team.

He adjourned the case for mention only to the first court in Killarney in September.
