Kerry set free with its own 'passport'

Kerry, a county which has long proclaimed its independence, has finally come up with its own passport.

Kerry, a county which has long proclaimed its independence, has finally come up with its own passport.

"The Kingdom of Kerry is an independent State (of Mind) attached to its nearest neighbour, Ireland, by a fluke of geology and a couple of half decent roads," it tells us. The passport also proclaims the principal occupation of Kerry people is to give "thanks for having been born there".

Carefully crafted out in passport size, with room for a photograph, the green-covered 20-page document allows the bearer to pass freely as a citizen of Kerry.

Launched by Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism John O'Donoghue, a TD for South Kerry who was once refused on a Ryanair flight because he was not carrying photo identity, it is on sale for €5.95.

Tim O'Sullivan, a member of the Sneem, Castlecove, Caherdaniel IRD development group, said the aim of the passport was to raise money to resource the organisation, which is trying to stop population decline in the dramatically beautiful Ring of Kerry.
