Kewell withdraws injured as Liverpool held

Liverpool had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Crewe Alexandra in their pre-season friendly at Gresty Road.

Harry Kewell made his first appearance for the Reds on English soil but had to come off shortly before half-time with what looked like an ankle injury.

Crewe took the lead in a match that was played as a tribute to former Alex defenders Steve Macauley and Shaun Smith, with a 19th-minute glancing header from David Vaughan.

But Michael Owen bagged the equaliser with another header a minute before the interval.

Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier also gave French youngsters Anthony Le Tallec and Florent Sinama Pongolle their club debuts, the pair coming on as substitutes.
